Although I can empathize with other artists’ concerns about copyright with regards to AI art, AI art generators do not simply “copy” their works. Rather, they are trained on billions of existing images and attempt to generate original art based on the training.
Human artists similarly learn from other people’s works, but we are ‘trained’ on much smaller datasets. I believe AI eventually will be able to outperform humans in just about every domain, based on the sheer amount of data available for them to be trained on.
It’s amazing, and perhaps a bit frightening, that we’re only in the ANI (artificial NARROW intelligence) stage. Next comes AGI (artificial GENERAL intelligence) and eventually ASI (artificial SUPER intelligence).
ASI is when technological singularity occurs. Singularity is a term used to describe the center of a black hole and the origin of the Big Bang. It’s where the laws of physics break down, and no one knows what’s beyond it. It’s a very appropriate term when used to describe the point where machines attains super-intelligence– no one knows what is going to happen.
In the meantime, let’s just enjoy AI art!
