As a traditional artist who is passionate about AI art, one thing that I want to impress upon people is that AI art isn’t just about computational and algorithmic image generation.
There is this mysterious black box that gives rise to an emergent creativity that no one– not even the creators of the AI models themselves– fully understands…
As someone with a science background– I hold a master’s degree in medicinal chemistry– in addition to being a lifelong artist and art lover, I suspect that the human brain works in a similar way.
Everything is algorithmic and mathematical at the most fundamental physical level. This applies to both natural cognition and artificial intelligence alike.
To dismiss artificial intelligence and creativity as merely algorithmic doesn’t say much because we really don’t understand what is going on in the black box, just like we don’t understand what goes on in our own brains when we think or create art.
At any rate, AI is far more complex than some people believe. There are emergent capabilities, like creativity, that are at the same time very intriguing and downright frightening.
